"Yes, if you have to communicate, pass notes. Whispering causes you to bang your vocal cords together as strongly as if you were shouting. No matter what the cause of your laryngitis, the most important thing you can do for your voice is to give it a rest. Try to go a day or two without talking. The air you exhale through your larynx--that voice box commonly known as your Adam's apple--has to vibrate through your vocal cords (a central muscle bundle in connective tissue) in just the right way. When the cords are scarred or swollen, they don't create the right shaped "container" for that air. That allows breath to escape." The vocal cords can't vibrate correctly, in other words. Another source says that even whispering can strain the vocal cords. You can "speak softly but do not whisper because whispering can actually irritate your larynx more than speaking softly".

I am a speech language pathologist. Contrary to one of the other people that answered.... whispering does not cause injury to your vocal folds. They are not engaged, not vibrating, and therefore not smacking against each other at all. That's why its whispering! Whispering is air passing from your lungs and being resonated in your throat, mouth and nose. So no, technically, it isn't "bad" but it can be drying. The most important thing is not to force your voice. Speak without forcing (which may be a whisper for a day or so) and then, as you are healing, to use your voice gently with gentle vocal onset. Follow a good vocal hygiene program. One example is: http://www.elkriver.k12.mn.us/specialed/voice_hygiene.html
