Hello Tina,
Clenching your jaw or grinding your teeth while you sleep can indeed cause pain, in the teeth, the root and gums. I have TMJ myself and besides ruining my front teeth, which have been repaired, it hurt tremendously. Clenching and grinding can put up to 200 lbs. of pressure on a tooth. I got a mouth guard for $10 online at drleanoards.com. It's just a hard but flexible plastic that protects the teeth and takes the pressure off the jaw joint. Cant be seen if mouth is closed. RE: work. Also when you can, as often as you can, put warm compresses on your jaw joint..to relax the tense muscles. Let warm water run over the same area, while you are in the shower. Then you really need to tackle the stress, with a brisk walk or relaxation techniques.... calming breathing..etc.
I hope this helped and that you feel better soon! :)

Clenching your jaw can cause tooth pain. If you are clenching your jaw, you are most likely grinding your teeth or clenching them together very tightly. This can cause cracking and breaking of your teeth. If I were you I would see a dentist about getting a mouth guard. If you are unable to get to the dentist right away, you can get an inexpensive mouth guard from your local drug store.
Hope this helps:)

Mine hurt all the time from that and also from grinding my teeth which I do alot while I sleep. I tried chewing gum and that doesn't help. Instead try a peice of hard candy while your stressed out to keep from clenching your jaw. And if you are suffering from a lot of stress on a daily basis, you can consult a professional about stress relief techniques and to make sure you don't have anxiety disorder.

Yes, it can. I'm having the same problem off and on. Ask your dentist about a invisalign-like thing. You put that on your teeth whenever you're grinding.
