First get the dog checked out by your vet rule out mange or some other skin condition. I don't know of any way to promote fur growth but after your vet determines the cause he can probably recommend a way to help with the regrowth.

losing fur- could be nutrition or allergies. Those are the common causes. Use at least mid quality dog food- they are usually better nutritionally. Supplement every once and a while with canned dog food.
Another common cause is ring worm, esp if your dog is around cats. It is actually a fungus and any antifungal ointment/cream can treat it. It usually is pretty much circular and with bigger ones, you see a faint white ring inside of the red circle. They usually grow bigger as well.
A product to help promote growth: Fleet farm (or Farm and Fleet) has a product in the horse section called Mane and Tail Growth. It is a yellow liquid in a clear bottle. It is about $11 and a bottle lasts forever. We have used it on dogs and horses to get hair faster growth. Our dog with allergies always loses her hair in the fall, and with this product, the itchy swelling and irritated look is gone and the hair is growing back. No pills/creams the vet prescribed worked for her.
There is usually a cause for hair loss- you might want to go to do a check up at the vet to see what the problem could be.

Oh geeze, I was so ignorant... I bought a "beagle-poo'' from a BYB, for a start. I thought designer dogs were breeds. I thought I was awesome for feeding Eukanuba. I thought collar corrections were mean and cruel. I got a poodle mix and thought I could get away with grooming only a couple times a month. (With his hair, it's at least daily) Those are the main ones. He's only 15 months old, but so much can change in a year (: I honestly learned 99% of everything here in the dog section. I am so glad I found it (: And the worst single incident I did was a month or so ago, I was in a bad mood, he woke me up at 4AM and wasn't listening to me, so I yelled at him. Like, not yelled-yelled, but I was just pissed, and he knows when I get mad and I was MADDD. He ran and hid behind the couch. That honestly made me cry. Now he's scared whenever I yell/get mad/raise my voice. I feel horrible.. :( Legit: My favorite breed is a Miniature Poodle. So...hahah. There are too many poo's and doodles to keep up.

Your dog is not that old. Even if it's a giant breed, it still should have a few good years left in it. Your dog could have anything from mange to ringworm, to psoriasis or some other skin condition. Best bet, get to a vet quick.

Hmm...There could be many reason why your dog is loosing its fur. Maybe he has fleas and is scratching. I dont think its his age. 6 or 7 isnt really old for a dog. I think you should go to a vet and get him checked out.

there are so many things that could cause hairloss... poor food, allergies, demodectic and sarcoptic mange.. i recommend getting the dog to the vet for a skin scrape to test for mange (mites).. another thing that might help is putting cod fish oil on his food... good luck
