he is a doberman puppy. It doesn't matter what we do,he jumps up and puts his paws on the counter/table and grabs whatever he can. It is such a pain to have to constantly chase him around the house trying to get it back. he can run very fast and is much smarter than the average pup.

Take your little darling to obedience class. He's having lots of fun with this game and appears to be winning. Get control soon so that you don't end up just wanting to get rid of him. Most dogs are relinquished to shelters because of behavior problems. They don't have any idea how to act until we properly socialize them. This requires a lot more than chasing them down when they do something wrong. They need to be conditioned to many things in order to become the pet you wanted when you purchased him. Now follow through for him and your own well being. Take him to class and learn how to get the most out of this lovely dog. He's counting on you. Buy dog training book or two and try what they recommend. Good luck, from once the owner of unruly dogs.

Did you ever think that it has become a game to him? If you run after him everytime he takes something then he thinks its fun. You need to be consistant with him and tell him no when he jumps up on the table or counter. Find a loud noise or a newspaper and pop it or his paws so he will know that it is not appropriate for him to be on the counter or the table. Then if he does get something, don't run after him, either put him in time out, pop the paper, tell him NO, and ignore him. Soon he won't want to do any of that stuff cause it will no longer be a game. Get him a good toy, something that is strong, something he really loves and when he does something bad take that away from him. He is like a little kid!!! He wants your attention, and when he can't get it any more maybe he will stop doing what he isn't suppose to. Give praise when things are done well, and pop him with the paper when he does bad things. It won't take long. He needs some training. Go to the library and get the book about dobbies to help you with finding out what he really likes to do. Also a book on training might be a good book to get!

Good Luck

ok let look at this ,he one smart dog right ?, you have to get smarter , its called training , you will need choke chain, a long lead ,and some commen sence here !! you need to expect him to steal ,and work on when , say you place some food o n the table ,you can expect him to steal it ,but the tables yours ,right ?
so put on the lead ,and wait near the table ,wait till he jumps up near the table , and pull the heck of the chain ,i mean let him have it ,he will scream i bet ,but not for long ,at the same time .you scream '' OUT'' , then wait for a sec ,see if he will do it again ,i bet he will, at this time ,he cant feel you on his lead ,onlywhen a correction takes place , you need to show him its your table and stay off it , fro m today every day ,leave the lead on for a while ,maybe a hour ,after you have corrected him , he will get the idea real fast , im sorry but so will you , stop running after him ,if you got his lead on hes withing 6 ft of you ,maybe he think your playing ,and your not , one more thing, treat him for not stealing , and can i recommend , LEERBURG ,COM really nice site

I have to ask are you feeding him before you feed yourselves and does he have any toys to play with?

Also when he is about to jump up to put his paws on the counter/table either block him or if he succeeds knock them off before he can grab any food and tell him in firm voice "No". If that doesn't work take him to obedience classes.

You've turned this bad behavior into a game by chasing him. Don't chase him, tell him he is a bad puppy, make a loud disturbing noise when you see him doing something bad.

The idea is to take all the fun out of it.

You need to shower your puppy with attention. He takes things that don't belong to him because he wants your attention, and he gets it when he takes things. Like you said, he is much smarter than the average pup, and he knows what to do to get attention.

The blue mint squirters called Sweet Breath work sooo mcuh. Dogs hate the taste so once you catch your dog with something their not soposed to have in their mouth just squirt some in their mouth and you'll be glad you took my advice.

swat him with a newspaper everytime he does it and say "down " in a firm voice when he starts to jump on anything!
The newspaper won't hurt, but the sound will scare him!
Good luck!
Make sure he has lots of toys and rawhides, so he'll leave your things alone!

Omg yes! My maltese does the same thing, so we give him his own little toys but that doesnt do much. He likes to eat the Christmas tree so we shut all the doors in the house and hide stuff. I hope that helps, Good Luck!

Give him toys of his own. Play with him and walk him regularly. Over time he will calm down, 1 yr is still very young.
