Oxford & Cambridge are very expensive cities for property. For an average family, the largest part of their income is spent on the mortgage or rent.

Average rental costs are slightly higher as there is so much competition for rental property from students. Landlords can rent by the room to students, as opposed to the whole house for families, and they can usually make more money from students.

I would estimate your typical monthly costs for a family of 4 might be: (in UK pounds).

Rent or Mortgage 750-1000
Council tax 150
Food (from supermarket) 400
Utilities 200
(And everything else: car, car insurance, road tax, home insurance, pension, eating out, public transport etc etc)

I estimate that an average family of 4 would need 2000 pounds a month to live on. Now there are many, many families who live on an awful lot less than this - but wouldn't have much quality of life.

You'll cut your cloth accordingly, but Oxford and Cambridge are expensive, popular cities.
