The earth is constantly wiggling about it's axis and wandering about it's orbit in motions known as the Milankovitch mechanism that changes the earth's obliquity, eccentricity and precession. In short, the earth doesn't always receive the same amount of sunlight uniformly about it's surface from one year to the next and these motions can under the right conditions cause climate change lasting for thousands of years.
A millennium ago the earth was warm enough to grow grain in Greenland and grapes in Scotland during a time know as Medieval climatic optimum 900 - 1300 AD, that was believed to be caused by more sunlight reaching the northern hemisphere during that time period. The warm was followed by a time known as the Little Ice age that lasted from 1400 to 1900 AD. possibly as a result of several volcanic eruptions combined with lesser amounts sunlight reaching the earth due to a period of lower levels of solar activity know as the Maunder Minimum. Earths climate is never and has never been a constant thing.
Climatic conditions up until man showed up were simply natural events, but now things have changed. There is no doubt that global warming is a fact and it is the rate of increased warming that we are seeing today that tells us this is not a natural occurrence.

Here's an interesting article you should read carefully. There are several important points: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061228/ap_on_sc/climate_change

First, you'll notice that they are demonstrating that the climate has been chnging like this for many, many centuries. They comment that the earth was much warmer many times. And they say that it is part of a natural trend that MIGHT be affected by human activity. It also mentions that we are looking blindly into the future, which is true. All these forecasts of global cataclycisms are no more than hype. Its one of the more honest articles I've seen lately.
