I think they just lowered it 32 from last year's suggestion of 33. 33 was just too hard on some of the ladies.

If you’re seriously asking, there is no doctrine stating that woman must have a certain amount of children to make it to heaven. If there was, then many wouldn’t just because they are infertile, now that is right. However the church did state that families should have as many children as the parents can financially handle. Other then that it’s up in the air. Let me point out the I personally have meet many non-Mormon family’s with more children then any Mormon family. My mother is the youngest of eight children and although they are all members now, they joined after my mother was born. Before that they never even heard of the church. In fact my grand mother was a “dyed in the wool Baptist.”

Dear Nightshade,

Your question sounds strange to this "Mormon’s" ears, because it implies harshness and control that is completely foreign to our faith. Our congregations are led by unpaid volunteers, who serve for a few years, and then are replaced by others. Our local group, for example, is led by a fisherman. Most of that lay priesthood could probably quote this scripture, which accurately tells how we believe members should be led:

“No power or influence can or ought to be maintained by virtue of the priesthood, only by persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love unfeigned; By kindness, and pure knowledge, which shall greatly enlarge the soul without hypocrisy, and without guile….”

Thus, there is no dictate about how many children a faithful woman should have. We believe the teachings of the Bible, which say that “children are an heritage of the Lord” and parents are encouraged to bring children into the world, but every consideration must be given to building a happy home. Since a mother seems to bear a lot of the responsibilities of rearing young children, her joy and comfort should be the first consideration. Sometimes that means few or no children.

Our own family was limited to two natural children, because my wife’s health might be jeopardized by a third pregnancy. She wanted more! After waiting for six long years, we were finally able to adopt two brothers, but four children were all we had. We filled the emptiness left in our heart by serving as foster parents to many troubled teens. My two brothers were blessed with seven children each. The wives loved their large families, and are now enjoying the company of many, many grandchildren.

There is no set number, a person doesn't even HAVE to have children...some of the requirements for eternal life in the Celestial Kingdom are: eternal marriage, making and keeping sacred covenants in the temple, baptism...just to name a few.
I would say a big reason most LDS families have a large number of children is because family is THE most important thing in our religion - besides Christ and our Heavenly Father of course. But family is everlasting, or can be, and we like having lots of family around!
My parents are LDS and have 4 children. My husband has 5 siblings. I know some LDS who have 10 and some who have 2. It just depends on everyone's circumstances and how many they can physically, mentally, and spiritually take care of.

They're saved without having babies, but they want to have a lot of babies because they believe there are "spirit babies" in heaven that need a turn on earth.

G-d is very busy, if you know what I mean.
