It means that a cloud passed in front of his eyes; in other words, his vision was obstructed by something or other. It could be more figurative, implying that his perceptions are clouded for a moment.

"A cloud passed infront of Villefort's eyes." means that Villefort has suddenly lost his rational "thinking"; that he could no longer think sanely, his judgement was "clouded" by anger, rage or extreme grief, a moment of insanity has descended upon him because of what the miasma of emotions that he felt.

It so depends on what text you are reading, and what the story is. This could literally mean a cloud is passing by. It could mean death, even. For example: "A cloud passed in front of Villefort's eyes, as he closed them in death." I am not sure what you are reading, so I don't know for sure. It could also mean he realized something. It could mean that he was unsure about something. It could mean that he was haunted by a memory. It could mean that his judgment was clouded by something such as love for someone, or hatred for someone. It could even mean that he is just thinking about something. It all depends on if you are reading poetry, or a novel, etc. Hope this helped.

I wrote a poem, The Cloud That Hails My Soul, it was about death and all the hurt and pain I've been through. He could be possibly be dreaming and passing through time, the love ones he knew are now gone and he's watching them pass through thought or invisioning, or maybe that burden have been lifted up from his spirit and now hes free.

I believe that the "cloud" isn't literal. I think it means that the character's eyes took on the traits of someone experiencing one of the following:

-the character is about to get REALLY angry
-the character has just recieved some devastating news and is either shocked into great sorrow or the desire to get even
-something horrible has happened to the character, something that brings him immeasurable sadness.
-the character is about to go insane or "snap" in some way, it is the last straw

I am betting that something major just happened to your character, but without knowing context, I can just guess. :)

In general, it isn't a good thing. LOL

Lacking any additional context makes this extremely difficult.

It could equate to a 'shadow of doubt'.

A moment of sadness or mourning...

Fear...

The general reference to a cloud crossing one's eyes is indicative of an emotional moment of some sort...

Villiefort was up very high, maybe he was hill walking, and a cloud passed by his face and he watched it go by.
