The pound sign means Libre. (a latin word).
$ sound comes from Sovereign (going back to the British times in America). It was used as a standard against Gold. One sovereign was equal to one ounce of gold. $ is also used in E.Africa, Hongkong, Singapore, and various other countries of British commonwealth.
But India, a British commonwealth, is an exception. They used the term "Rupya"(A Sanskrit word) - later British termed it as Rupees, stayed without alteration, which is the name of the currency even today.
