All small dogs are "yappy" dogs. They bark at anything that move and NEVER stop...

Pomeranians tend to be somewhat difficult to housebreak, particularly as far as urinating goes. They do shed quite a bit, and need to be brushed. They're not rated very highly for intelligence, but can be good companions if you have a good bit of time for them. They tend also to be best as an "only pet." They are also quite yappy (although not all small dogs are yappy, as another answerer stated). If this is your first dog, a Pomeranian may not be the best choice. If you're new to dog ownership and particularly want a small dog, a toy or miniature poodle might be a good place to start. They are extremely intelligent, do not shed at all or have dander (which creates problems for people with pet allergies) -- although they do require regular grooming and trimming.

Good luck!

AHHH!!! why does everyone say poms are yappy...ITS ALL HOW YOU TRAIN THEM!! i have two poms, and i used to live in an apartment and i had NEVER got a complaint. I love the little buggers. rocco only barks when there is someone at the door and chloe barks then too, but when you tell them to be quiet, they stop. I have a 3 year old pom. that is just the best. I trained him to give hugs...they are smart. but like any dog you have to train them. and spend time with them. My puppy, learnt how to pee outside and to pee on her paper when she is in her room.
I have videos on youtube.com (nick:nicky1119 you can do a search) you can check them out.

My boss has one. Cute and funny but she's hyper. She said she has also had some health problems because she is so small. Just be aware that smaller dogs can/will have problems and tend to cost more money... not just the purchase price, but in the long run.
