He rode pretty well one might call it sitting on and not falling off !!! but he pulled his horses mouths about as did so many actors in those days ... they have got better . Look at Colin Firth in Pride and Prejudice . The lower part of his leg does not move and he sits deep in the saddle so he has what is called a 'good seat' and so he does not need to hang on to his horse's mouth. He has probably done quite a bit of riding and had dressage lessons too

I would think that he knew quite a bit since several of his movies portrayed him riding horses.
