do not administer your own vet care. talk to your vet and see if they will do a payment plan. if you tape the foot, it could fuse incorrect, dystrophy, turn black, become infected, fall off, cause severe pain, and traumatize your bird.

if you have to, and i know it's hard, if you can't pay for the vet, surrender you bird to the vet and they will take care of it and find it a home.

in situations like this, sometimes the most loving and caring thing you can do is get the bird someone who can take care of it better than you financially.

Hi there. I may not agree with your decision to save money, but many of us are in financial binds that prevent us from doing the ideal. We need to differentiate whether this injury is actually the leg and the bird is avoiding pressure on its foot due to an injured leg. I assume there is no deformity. It may not be broken and just have a sprain or contusion of some sort. This is what I would do. We need to design a splint which can be made of an appropriate sized straw that is cut straight down its length. Put it on the length of the injured leg and tape it not tight. The split will allow for swelling and not impede circulation. Then roll some piece of cloth and place it under the foot in its natural position. Tape it loosely in place. That way if there is a break, both the leg and foot will heal in the position of function. Use your imagination and good judgment. This can be done well. Birds heal faster than mammals. I have set a broken wing with a hard piece of plastic and tape and in a week the bird took flight. You may have a few trial runs with your homemade splint. Take your time. The bird may take it off and you replace it. No big deal just think natural position. That is the key. I hope this helps and that you have a friend for encouragement and assistance. My hopes are with you.
