A cookbook for children is probably your best bet. It explains the basics and starts with simple but tasty dishes. Once you understand the terminology and measurements, get a cookbook for simple dishes. You can work your way up from there. Community centers and adult learning programs sometimes have good starter courses where you can actually cook something under supervision.

The easiest way to start learning how to cook is to grab an easy recipe (try Rachel Ray for 30 minute meals or someone like that) and follow the recipe TO THE LETTER. Any cookbook you buy these days, and there are some for beginners, will have all the measurement explanations and everything else you need to get started. Maybe try a kids cookbook, they usually have really simple recipes that are easy to follow.

If you always follow the directions, you should have no problem. Then, once you get better at it, you can try experimenting with different seasonings and spices.

Another good trick is to go to your favorite restaurants and ask the server/chef how they made something, or at least what the ingredients are. Some aren't afraid to share their secrets and you can try to reproduce your favorites at home.

Good luck and don't give up!!!

Simple main dishes:

Mac and Cheese
Spaghetti
Baked Chicken (whole or peices)
hamburgers
grilled cheese
meatloaf
scrambled eggs or omletes

Tips:
- there's no shame in cooking meals from a box (Hamburger Helper, Kraft Mac and Cheese, etc), just pay attention to the directions and eventually you will learn how to make them from scratch

- start with simple meals with only a few ingredients, once you get a handle on those, branch out into more complex meals

- cook meals that will have left overs so you can eat them throughout the week or freeze it and eat it later (this saves money)

- follow all directions carefully (especially directions for raw meat), if you don't have a timer, buy one

- invest in a meat thermometer and use it according to the directions to avoid getting food poisoning

When I moved out, my mom hand-printed a little notebook with my favorite recipes that she knew would be simple to make. She added more notes than normal to be extra clear. Maybe you have friends or family that could do this with your favorites?

Also, some of the simplest things to make are soups, stews and chilis. They are very flexible and forgiving - you can have varying sizes of meat and vegetables and add spices as you go. As someone already mentioned, www.allrecipes.com is a great site. Try searching for recipes with the word "easy" in the title, and only try recipes with 4 or 5 stars.

Wander down to your local used bookstore. Spend a bunch of time in the cookbook section reading. Try to find (and buy and take home and use) "Cooking A to Z" "Laurel's Kitchen" (revised edition) and "The Good Housekeeping Cookbook" They are really good places to start learning.

Do what my dad did when he was in grad school. On Thursday he invited people over to eat on Saturday night and asked them what they wanted to eat. He used the public library cookbooks and usually the dinners were good. Sometimes he really blew it. He doesn't cook very often now, but when he does it is usually something good.

this will sound silly, but watch as much of the Food Network as you can! My cooking has improved quite a bit and most shows can be followed easily by beginners, and there are a few shows made just for beginners. please remember that not every dish will turn out well and that's ok! it happens to every cook! just use it as a chance to have pizza and smile!! there's always tomorrow's supper!
