I really really want to go to NYC and I can't afford to pay a couple thousand dollars to go. What is the best way to get there for really cheap?

Look on expedia.com for deals or try lastminutetravel.com--if you want to fly.

You might find someone in your area who is looking for someone to share gas expenses if you check out craigslist.org and click on your state.

A bus is usually an inexpensive and fairly comfortable way to go.

Time of year makes a difference too. Go when kids are in school -- not during the summer or holiday times.

It really depends on where you are coming from.. for example, from Boston, MA, they have the Chinatown bus that does trips daily to NY for I think $15.. you can also visit the city by train and if you find a low cost airline, and buy in advance, you can usually find a cheap flight there as well..

The problem is not so much getting here.. but where to stay when you get to NY.. That is the killer and if you are from a small town, it will be hard to get over the sticker shock... Staying in the suburbs is no subsitute for the real NYC experience.. yes you can find cheaper hotels (some can be scary) but you may want to look into short-term stay apartments / bed & breakfasts, what they may lack in amenities, you'll make up in the price and have more $$ to spend in the City!

Good Luck!

It depends on how far you're willing to go to save money.

I've found the best airfare with jetblue in my experience, but that only works if you live near a connecting airport. A round trip between california and JFK usually costs me $200-300.

As far as accommodation, check out this site: http://www.couchsurfing.com
I've been a member there for a while and have hosted a few people. It's a great community, and if you're the "pack light" type, it's perfect as you can sometimes find a place to crash for free (or almost free).

Otherwise, stay in youth hostels. $30 a night in a shared room (usually two bunk beds per room-4 people) and shared bathrooms on each floor. I can recommend the Big Apple Hostel: http://www.bigapplehostel.com/ and West End Studios: http://www.westendstudios.com/

Also check out the YMCA: http://www.ymcanyc.org/sub.php?p=services&sp=guest/guestmanhattan

For food, stay away from the fancy restaurants and go for the interesting-looking small delis and restaurants. Gray's Papaya has the best hot dogs (in my opinion) in the city for real cheap.

Take the airtrain from JFK instead of a cab. Take the subway everywhere that's more than a 20 minute walk away.

If you're gonna shop, stay away from Macy's and Fifth Avenue. Shop in the villages, or in Williamsburg.

As far as tourist attractions, there's no cheap way about it. Just do them in moderation and spend your time exploring the NYC that new yorkers love. Museums often have student discounts, as well as many broadway shows.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

I did a bus tour we left on a Friday at 7am and came home Sunday around midnight. cost about sixty bucks and we got to sleep the whole way home. I live eight hours from the city so that could have had something to do with it but check the gray hound bus site that's how i found the deal.

Everyone has recommended the normal sites: travel.yahoo.com, expedia.com, orbitz.com, etc. etc. But dont forget that those sites do not list airfare for Jetblue.com or Southwest.com. You can also try going to each airport's website and see if there is a small airline that might do it for less that is local to your area. I remember searching for a flight to minneapolis and the cheapest was through a local airline there that I never heard of. Good luck!

Sometimes a bus tour is a cheaper route to take.
I had a very nice tour to Disney World with my mom years ago and we each only paid $700. Which took care of the tickets and hotel room.
