Your safest bet (without your hair turning into an unnatural color) is to only go two shades lighter... Meaning if your hair is borderline black go for something rich and chocolatey... Bleaching you hair is VERY damaging and I wouldnt recomend it to anyone. MAybe try a few face framing highlights(two shades lighter) and get the hair color changing out of your system! I would KILL for dark dark dark brown hair...and Im sure its gorgeous!

If you want to dye your hair, you're going to need to bleach it first. Then, your hair will be a blonde color and you can dye it. Just a warning, though, bleaching your hair is very bad for the hair. My sister is an example of why you shouldn't bleach your hair and dye it. Back a few years ago, she dyed and bleached her hair so many times, that she was able to grap her bangs, crunch them, and you could see her hair break and fall. It was pretty much disgusting. Still, though, if you aren't going to go crazy like her, bleaching and then dyeing it should work fine. Just make sure that you use a very very good shampoo afterwards--preferably one for dry or damaged hair.

Hope it works!

I've done ALOT to my hair and I don't know how many times I've dyed it. I've tried about every color you can imagine and I will be the first to tell you that it won't turn out the color you want it to. My hair is very dark brown too and I wanted a lighter shade, it was very pretty and it turned orange. I had to go have it fixed. So think about it first.

Normally you do have to bleach it first, especially if your hair has red pigment (not usually noticable until the dye is applied). You could end up with coppery hair.

I'd definitely go with a professional and avoid the store bought dye.

Why do you want to dye your hair? Black hair is pretty :)

Consider highlights?

try it! i've dyed my hair with a light blonde dye when i had dark brown hair and it turned into a light brown. just give it enough to work on. so use blonde dye and it should work.

good luck! happy 2007.

Yes. I have naturally black hair and about 6 years ago I put highlights in it, well a professional done it. Don't do it yourself on black hair it may turn reddish copper.

the best thing to do is to go to a professional and have them get a sample of your hair that they can work with. They put a toner in it so they know how much to use to get the color you want, not an orange tint like in box colors

my hair is really black too and I dyed it brown. You can tell its brown in the sun more than in the dark.

Usually only if you bleach it first... sorry.

If you dye it any color, it will probably tint it a little.

Your best bet is to ask a stylest at a salon... don't waste your money on a box.
