You don't have to teach them, they already know. Tho this is not a breed that's extremely fond of taking a dip in the lake. They're not much of a water dog. Mine stays clear of it at all costs.

when you clean it, fill a buket or any thing with water that is three times larger than your puppy, let the puppy do what ever he/she wants. try to grab the puppy so that it look like the puppy is floating. or show the puppy how to swim, go to the internet about teaching a puppy how to swim, or if you have a bathtub, fill it with water, the you go in the tub and say to the puppy help, maybe the dog will come and save you
* make sure you put the water temperature good for your dog & take your puppy in the bathroom and lock the door so when you call help the puppy can hear you

You don't have to teach a dog to swim! They do it naturally! That's where the "dog paddle" came from! I take my puppy to the lake and let her have fun! I tie her retractable leash onto the end of her 6' leash, and just let her go! She splashes and dives her nose under the water, and just has a blast! I like the retractable, because it gives her so much more playing distance. I also walk up and down the dock and let her swim along! Take an extra roll of film in case you need it! Have fun!

puppies know how to swim natural instinct and well you can get in the pool with it and don't give it treats in the pool or it'll throw up in your pool and well you might not want that but like a small child start of at the first step and gradually increase the depth but i think you should start at the deep end that way he cant get out that easily and will have to swim to the steps to get out i mean he shouldn't drown hes a dog not a cat but good luck

John E is basically right. They are born swimmers. Getting them over the fear of water is another thing. Just toss him/her in the water with somebody. Once the pup is in the water, swim with him, or just be there when he gets out. Offer rewards for the pup each time.

first of all, for people who stated merely 'toss him in" - please, enable's have slightly extra admire for the canines and not freak them out. placed on your healthful, carry him in and help him under his chest for a minute. he will promptly initiate showing you that he can swim with the aid of doing the well-known "canines paddle" enable bypass.. he's swimming! do no longer tire him out too plenty and tutor (coach) him the place the stairs are. be conscious: in case you have ever given him a tub and he's dripping moist, %. him up from below (with one hand) off the floor (tub) and you will see his canines paddle then as nicely. (there's a stunning video probable on youtube, that exhibits somebody retaining a small canines above the bathroom and the canines does the canines paddle. (Too humorous) on no account bypass away him outdoors unsupervised with your pool. I had a chum that had a puppy comparable as your canines's age and he could no longer get out and ...nicely, you comprehend. :(

dogs are great swimmers, I also have a miniature American Eskimo dog, her name is Estrella. If you place him/her in the water it becomes natural to them, well they might want to get out of water, but you should make it a common thing for your dog, although they say Eskimos should not be washed often so their coat doesn't get damage. They suggest giving them a bath once every month to prevent their natural oils to be washed of which protect their coat (hair). They are beautiful dogs.
