Go to a shelter and find an adult dog. Some dogs like cats, some don't. If you have a cat, most shelters will "Cat Test" the dog to see if it's cat friendly.

A calm small dog couldn't be further from the truth! At the same time a medium sheep dog or gundog is too active as well. Do some research and you be surprised what breeds may match your interests. I was delighted to discover how docile , clean and gentle greyhounds were, I'll never look back!

Calm small dog? Pug, bulldog. The cat would get along with the dog if they're raised together.

If you want both a cat AND a dog, I recommand getting a kitty and a puppy. They only learn at a young age to get along. A poodle would be calm. But dogs from shelter are more kind, good-hearted, and one-in-a-million-like. good luck!

i've yet to see a small dog that is calm. the older the calmer tho. young dogs are usually very playful and jump and run and are go go go non stop. if you want a calm dog get some with a little age to it. some cats and dogs get along, especially if you get them when they are both still babies and raise them together.

I would say go to your local shelter and adopt an older dog who just wants some loving. They will love to just rest under your feet whenever you are together.
Or, if you want a purebred puppy, I suggest a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or an English Toy Spaniel. There are others, but Spaniels make great companions and just love to be with you.
As for the cat, again, a rescue makes a great companion, and dogs and cats will get along great so long as they are properly introduced and socialized.

most small dogs are pretty high energy. as for anything they can be taught to conform to your lifestyle with a little work. try shihtzu, maltese, pekinese, or possibly a lhasa apso. steer clear of anything with terrier in the name. no pugs either. the part about cats/dogs cohabitating, i've got 3 of each. we have the occassional outburst but mostly we live in peace.

Pugs are very friendly and good dogs but are a bit goofy. Dashouds (Mini wiener dogs) are very cuddly and easy to train. By nature they are burrowers so they love to be near you. Slightly protective not big barkers. (So no yippie dog syndrome) and in my opinion cute as long as you don't let them get too fat. P.S. Both breeds are also easy to groom and maintain.

A sheltie is a very calm dog. I have a sheltie/beagle mix and he is very calm and likes to lay under my chair. Also he loves my cat.

Small dogs are usually hyper. I raise chihuahuas and they are not as hyper as the terrier breeds. I can't tell you of any that are really calm. A chihuahua is the ultimate lap dog.
