If you love the gift, just sincerely say "thank you," and let them see you enjoying the gift. Also, since you live with them you will have many many opportunities to say "thank you" again in the coming weeks, so do that pretty often (just casually like "oh, gee I really love my new computer game, I've been playing it all day, thanks again!")

If the gift is really awesome and you want to do something special to show your appreciation, you can buy/make them a special treat or do a big favor :-)

A hug and a kiss (circumstances permitting of course) and a well meant 'thank you" are certainly enough.

If you feel you want to go further than that you can make a small gesture. If you're the creative sort you could do something like that. If you're the cooking sort you can make something special. If you're the household sort you can clean the bathroom when it's not your turn. etc etc etc

Since you live under the same roof, there's no need to write a 'thank you' note. Just take a moment to thank the person who gave you the gift and tell them how much you appreciate their thoughtfulness ... a kiss is good too! Short and sweet!

A written-out thank you note is WAY to formal and unnecessary. Simply tell them occasionally how much you are thankful for the gift (ex. how useful it is, how much time it saves, what you like about the gift, etc.)

A thank you card with a gift card to a restuarant is a nice thing to do.
