If you're looking in DC, here are some suggestions:
For large, family style meals, try Maggiano's in Tyson's corner (and it's a chain, so there may be more in the DC area). It is wonderful, with huge portions. The wild mushroom ravioli is downright addictive. The chopped salad is also spectacular. And for desert, nothing beats the pound cake, and I'm not a pound cake gal. I would have gone for the chocolate bomb every time, but a friend ordered the pound cake: dense, rich, buttery. I wish I could make a "rachel ray" face in this answer. It is a large, loud, lively restaurant with reasonable prices, especially for all the food you get.
On the other end of the spectrum, the tiny, intimate Coppi's (named and deecorated after the famous Italian bicyclist) on U St NW is an organic Italian restaurant, more boutique-y, and more expensive, but very much worth the effort and espense. Their pizzas are actually quite reasonable. The salads are exquisite. The pastas memorable. And everything is organic.

I'm assuming you're looking for one near DC....there's a really good one near the Pentagon City stop on the Metro Rail. It's on that strip where there are a ton of resturants in Pentagon City. I haven't been there in like three years but if my memory is right, it's kind of like a house looking place on the left hand side of the road.
They've got some great itialian dishes and wines....you should try it sometime.

While searching for that ideal place that will provide you with that meal that just hits the spot.
This can ocassionally be a "trial & error" process. As well, we all have gotten recommendations from people who may prefer a certain restaurant.
Perhaps it would be ideal to research online some restaurants and the ratings recievied
