The man in street speaks vaguely of "the olden times," for he has but one epithet to apply to all the ages which lie between the dawn of history and the invention of the locomotive. this looks like an LSAT question lol. i would say 'the comforts of the past" and as for the meaning of epithet, i'd say characteristic best describes its meaning in the context of the passage.
