Fair Trade certified coffee is coffee that has been certified to be grown with more labor rights for the workers than are common in the third world countries where coffee is grown. In addition, there are requirements for community investing, sustainable growth and pesticides.

Fair Trade is generally made by independant farmers. That means that the farmer is making an honest wage. Often it is shade grown and there for much better tasting. The mass produced coffee is made in fields not unlike a normal farm, which is unnatural to coffee.

It's supposed to have been grown and processed by people who get paid a living wage for their work.
