I am not interested in granite and am mainly considering laminate (formica) or corian because I don't really need anything too upscale. I would consider quartz but my impression is it's outrageously expensive. But it would be so easy to have a reference source saying laminate costs x, corian is x+2, etc. I have had bad experiences at Home Depot and am trying to avoid them if possible.

In Texas the cost of Corian style of countertops is about 3 to 4 times the amount for laminated plastic counters. In my 30+ years of experience, laminated plastic has been a constant but is rarely used in the majority of new homes above $200,000. Everyone wants granite and a few want Corian. According to the Corian installers, they can come back after many years of service and re-sand the entire top and refinish to like-new condition. Laminated plastic cannot make that claim. Ince scratched there is nothing you can do outside of replacement besides patching with a colored Dap or marker. However, I just built a new home and installed laminated plastic colored to simulate a granite look to save money. I installed it myself and put Noce' tile on the backsplashes and it looks great. Labor is the biggest cost of installing laminated plastic. The plastic and adhesive costs me about $2 a square foot. Installers charge over $5 a foot for installation. Corian, around here, costs in the $30 and up range installed.
