I have a 9 yr old Schipperke with multiple problems..Degenerative disk disease, osteoarthrits and osteoporosis, torn cruiate ligament. The poor thing has a very hard time walking and squatting to pee. We recently took her to a dog chiropracter which has helped but then had started to drag her left hind limb--torn cruciate ligament. After weighing our options, surgery was the best option (had it done 12/27/06). She was previously on Deramaxx and occasionally Prednisone (not at same time). Now with this surgery she's on Remadyl, which I think is similar to Deramaxx. Does anyone have any sugestions or thoughts or better medical treatment? Please help!

I have a 9 year old beagle. She has arthritis and a bad "knee" (anterior cruciate ligament - not torn but severely stretched). We have her on:
(1) "Joint Care" (MSM, Glucosamine and Chondroitin) complex (1000 mg per day - I don't know what that translates to in US equivalent)
and
(2) 2 pills (1 per meal - we feed her twice a day) of 81 mg aspirin (the low dosage stuff used by heart patients
I checked this regime with my vet. She was totally accepting of this. It is less expensive than the vet meds and she told me it was fine. Perhaps you could ask your vet.
Good luck. "Skips" are really nice dogs, by the way!

You've got to trust your vet on this one. If you're not totally happy with how your schipperke's doing, why not try a holistic vet - they can do some amazing things - maybe they can help your girl.
