They freeze and get cold just like humans. Infact all animals do. They can however stand colder temps for a longer period. In most parts of the country they tell you when the wind chill drops make sure they have a warm place or bring them inside.
That is the reason why dogs houses always look to small for the dog. It's to help keep heat inside.

Watch cows and horses in bad weather they always stand with their backs to the wind.

How dogs react to cold weather also depends on their fur type. A dog with long, thick, hair is more protected from the cold than a dog with short, thin hair. I have one dog with very thick long hair, who will go lay down in the snow, and seems to like it, even though we have a doggy door where he can come in the house. We also have a boxer who can't tolerate the cold. We have to force her out the door, just to get her to go to the bathroom, and she starts shivering as soon as she goes outside.

Dogs can freeze to death. They have more of a tolerance to the cold than a human, but they are suceptable to being left in the elements.

Just like people, dogs can die of exposure to the elements. Everyone should tune into "Animal Planet" once in awhile and educate themselves about animals.
