If you live in the state of ca, the seller of the vehicle is responsible to smog the vehicle. Since you cannot pass smog with a check engine light on, he would be responsible for fixing the vehicle and getting it to pass smog. You will likely have to sue him, though.
If you live in ca and go to the small claims court they have an advisory clinic to help.
P.S. Check to make sure the gas cap is on tightly since that is the most common cause of the check engine light and will go away anywhere from a few minutes to half a tank of gas after the gas cap is put on correctly.
If that isn't the problem, get an estimate to repair, it might be very cheap to fix and not worth the effort.

Don't panic first of all. I don't know what you bought or how much you paid or what state you live in (smog laws) but let me tell you this--"check engine" lights are a tool. In computer controlled cars there are several sensors on the engine that send a signal to the ECM. (cars computer). If just one little sensor is reading above or below the allowed limits the light will be triggered. Not the end of the world. If this truck runs good and you paid a reasonable price for it you should have a reputable shop do a "diagnostic check" which will reveal which sensor is the problem and ultimately give you a good idea if you have a serious problem or not. May not be a big deal.....remember a used car is just that and while it is not too cool that you have to take it right in to the shop it may not be a problem. Good luck.

If the vehicle was purchased "as is", it's yours to deal with. Usually you don't have much recourse in a private party sale, and caveat emptor prevails which is "buyer beware."
The check engine light may be a pretty insignificant thing, from a loose gas cap to an O2 sensor to almost anything. Just take it to a dealer and find out what it is. They can read the code if you can't.
Good luck, I know the feeling, but you'll probably get it handled without a lot of trouble.

Usually in a private sale, the vehicle is sold as is, where is. If the seller did something deliberatly to hide a problem, you might have some recourse, but that might be tough to prove. If that's the case, you might want to contact an attorney. You might just want to cut your losses and take the vehicle to get it checked out and see why the check engine light is on and just get it fixed.

you can make the check engine light come on by not putting the gas cap on correctly. keep you shorts on until you find out what the cause is. go to autozone or advance and have them put a reader on it and find out the code. then get the lawyers later.

Talk with the DMV and/or a lawyer. Laws vary from state to state regarding matters like this.

it is the responsebility of the seller to repair the vehicle so it will pass your state inspection, my state requires both safety and emmisions inspection upon transfer of ownership, repairs are the responsibility of the seller unless otherwise noted in the bill of sale
