according to http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/CamInfo-Selects-2006.htm, the best camcorder of the year is the "Canon Elura 100". Is there a camera to better suit my needs, that isn't too much more expensive? (Futureshop.ca is $599.99 right now). The Canon Elura 100 is MiniDv. Should I go with a newer technology? What is the newer technology? I'm looking for something under $1000-ish. Also, I need something Mac compatible. Anyone know what file format the Canon Elura 100 has it's movies made into? Thanx!

I dont know a lot about consumer cams, but from what I read about the elura 100, it seems like a pretty good cam. You can probably find it cheaper on eBay, I got my GL2 off of eBay for $1500, so you could probably save at least $100-200 off of eBay. With the saved money, you could get a mic, however, I dont think the elura 100 has a hot shoe or even a shoe, so cam mounted mics wont work. If want to spend a little bit more, get a pv-gs300 for around $500-600, or get a pv-gs400 for $700 off of eBay. These are 3ccd cams, which means good color reproduction, and also have shoes, so if you spent $200 more for a rode videomic, you would have great picture and sound for under $1000.

As for miniDV, it was developed in 1995, so its a relatively old technology compared to say, HD or Blu-ray, but it doesnt mean its an outdated or bad technology. Just because Blu-ray discs are newer doesnt mean they wont come full of glitches (which they will), or that HD editing is simpler than SD (it isnt). MiniDV is a technology that has already had most of the glitches worked out, so while it is over 10 years old, it still offers the best quality (compression wise) for the price, and ease of editing.

And addressing your question about your mac. Its a mac. The end.

And all miniDV movies when transferred to a computer are .avi files, 1 gig for 5 min., 12GB for an hour. After you edit and burn to DVD, you can delete those files, so dont worry about disk space. Hope this helps!
