Well, first off Peanuts are actually legumes... and grow underground. Almonds, Pecans, Walnuts, etc... all grow on trees which take SEASONS to mature.

Costs come from growing, picking, processing, and shipping the nuts... a bad weather-season can hurt nuts like almonds (flooding in orchards).

My lil brother lives on the edge of the California San Joaquin Valley (home of most US Almonds and Walnuts)... he has 3 almond trees on his ranch... and gets about 2 bushels a year. Processing the raw nuts and roasting them costs more than just going to store and buying some.
