As the past is limitless and as a lot of psychiatrists use techniques of delving into the past, doesn't that just add up to them guaranteeing long-winded sessions with lots of income based on hourly rates and repeat visits?

DMB, you're joking, right? What a horrible way to look at things. Money, money, money.

I hope so!

My wife has about 1.5 yrs left in Grad School until she gets her PhD. (PsyD)
After pumping out 17.5k a semester and not using any student loans, I think its not so selfish of me to look forward to the benefits of her education.

She/we have made many sacrifices for her to achieve this. The biggest sacrifice made is the time that is taken away from the family. In all honesty, it will be nice when she is finished with school because we will have that much more time to spend together.

The fact that she will be bringing in money instead of just spending it is music to any mans ears!

RESPONSE TO YOUR REMARK:
I can see where you are coming from... And I can respect that!
However, There are two sides to everything....
If you decided to make a business investment of a 1/4 MILLION DOLLARS... Would you not be looking for the return? Anyone who says "NO" is a complete liar! Do you have a CD, IRA, or a 401k account? Your doing the same thing I am doing. I will leave the Moral and Ethical aspects of the Psyc. field to the people who have put in the time, sweat, and tears to earn the deplomia.
Meanwhile, someone has to pay for it.
Just over ten years ago, I found myself living in my car! Don't tell me about money. I have been on both sides of that fence. I have to choose the side the money is on. I value the time with my family more that anything, by focusing on the money aspect, I get to feed them, put a roof over their head, and clothes on their backs. If you want to be a "working stiff" all of your life, then just carry on as you are doing... Maybe I'll give you a break on your rent when you retire.

If this were true, a psychiatrist would limit his practice to just a few patients. A good psychiatrist bases his patients visits on their needs. Most visits are limited to maybe 10 mins if they are an established patient. For more serious problems, then time would be more. When a phychiatrist is first seen, the the basic need to see him/her would be about their past if that is causing the patient their specific problems. But after that first visit, then the phychiatrist would know how to deal with the patient on a less lengthy time basis. Some doctors do care about patients more than money. I know that for sure.

No. The past is not limitless, everyone was born at some point and one can only take so many patients.
Pasts are important to know about for psychiatrists and psychologists. Childhood has a huge impact on the person, so yes, a lot of time is going to be spent on it. That doesn't mean it's for the money, it means it's to help people.

I think that that is true for some psychiatrists, but not all. I believe there are dilligent psychiatrists out there who are concerned about their patients and in getting to the root of their problem. However, there are some psychiatrists who are in it moreso for the money than for a desire to help people, so it just depends on whether or not you find a good psychiatrist who genuinely wants to help.

Hello!
In a private practice, I suppose that can happen. But most professionals are affiliated with a clinic, or center, or hospital. And they sign a contract for an agreed amount of salary, for x amount of years. So no matter how many times you see them, their paycheck is the same.
I hope this helped.
Take care! :)

yes it does. but it also makes you think of any moment in your life that something bad happened or how you feel. its sometimes good to look back into the past to see how your life changed and to solve problems that came up. :)

Hey, "Zen-san," you're confusing psychoanalysts and psychiatrists. Two different beasts.

It would seem so, but I would hope that they'd be more ethical.
