I have two 4 month old American Pit puppies and they do great with Royal Canin puppy food. The thing is that I feed them with the large breed baby dog formula which costs about $16 a bag and its only 7 lbs. They finish one bag in about 3-4 days, so you guys can imagine how much money that costs me to feed them. I also tried buying the regular 35 lb large breed puppy formula which costs about $42 a bag. Today I had to buy 4 bags of baby dog formula because that's the one they digest better and I almost spent $70. I love Royal Canin but I'd like to know if there's another brand out there that could give the same results and at a lower price. I'm aware of the crude fat and protein levels or Royal Canin compared to other brands, and it is way higher. I really need an advice please...

I like NutriSource, Natural Balance, Wellness, and Pro Plan Selects. They are all good brands of foods, but my favorite is the Nutrisource. It is about $30 for a 35 lb. bag, and the only downside of it is just that it can be hard to find (but you can order it online). It has a protein source as the first ingredient, no ground corn in it, and has beneficial bacteria (like yogurt) in it for the dogs digestive system.

First off, ask you pet food supplier if they can get larger bags of the Royal Canin for you. I am a part time manager at a pet food store and even if we do not normally caryy larger bags, we will order them in.
Royal Canin makes a high quality food. The price is steep but you pay for quality.
I am in Canada, so the prices here are different from the ones in the USA.
Check out:
Nutro's Natural Choice
Wellness
Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance
Eagle Pack
They are all high quality foods and not (especially Nutro's) not as highly priced.
Also, consider Nutro's "Ultra" food - my Border Collie puppy did very well on that!
The other option, if you are willing to consider it, is either a "raw frozen diet" or making your own raw diet for the dogs. This way you can control exactly what they eat.
None of the above options are "cheap". Always remember...if you are going to introduce a different food to your dogs, mix it with some of their regular food for a while so they can get accustomed to it.

If you want to switch them to the 35lb. bag of puppy food for 42$ which seems reasonable to me then you should do it over a one month period. Otherwise it will give them stomach problems diahrea ect. You need to mix the food gradually until their system is used to it. That goes for any brand of dog food.
