it's not the religion that wants that...it's the people running it

love your question!-
I dint have an answer but I do not belong to one.Religions are fundamentally wrong.nothing more then a glorified institutionalized nightmare.an identification for misguided people, who need this to actually believe in god but having nothing to do with the historic facts of JC.people tend to hold on to a religious title so they can impress the neighbor, and intimidate others. To show they are better they are more civilized, and of course that big fat fear that god will slide them down into the fiery pit if they don't say they are this or that.their believe is not strong enough to actually let go of the institution and just be a believer and live accordingly.they need to come in herds like cattle so their stomping is louder. So they humiliate, discriminated and instill fear so they can make their herd larger, hence will give them a sense of accomplishment and reassuring that they are taking the right path.sort of like a bad war general who believes to win in sheer numbers of his army much rather then intelligence or thought process.
no one will agree to this!LOL

i think i follow what you are saying, and in connection with the word "religion" i take that as they want them to lose the idea of self, and give away thier individuality, and i think that is what happens often, sadly

Humility is terribly needed in western culture.

Meekness is in short supply as well.

Religion has nothing to do with the arrogance that is rampant.
