There is nothing to spit. And if I DID feel some unexplained need to spit, I would NOT spit in the front of doorways, in public places, outside at work, or ANYWHERE other people would step on it! Someone please tell me what this is all about! Is it a macho thing? How is this macho? How does it make you a man? And last of all, why in the world do you need to spit?

I work at a high school and males and trashy females spit all the time. It is nasty! I've asked them why they do this and they can't come up with an answer. They will even spit in my trash can, but only once. I go ballistic and send them outside. I caught one kid spitting in the hall. I hauled his butt to the office and he was suspended for the day. I do not understand this gross need.

I never spit needlessly, but sometimes I spit if I have phlegm or if I am sick. I know some people who spit just to spit and THAT i don't understand.. But if you need to spit, I don't think there is really anything wrong with that.. As long as you don't spit ON anyone... BESIDES... if a dog can go on the ground and that is perfectly acceptable.. my saliva isn't going to hurt anything!

My dad didn't spit, and my husband doesn't spit. I don't remember any boyfriends spitting. Maybe most men don't really spit, but we notice the ones who do?

I agree....spitting is nasty and unnecessary.
When I see a man spitting my opinion of him slips down a notch.

I don't get it either. The only time I have spit is when I have a cold and get phlegm in my throat. And that's still embarassing. But I don't understand guys who just hack loogies and spew them everywhere.

It's a way of marking, like dogs pee to things they pass.
It's also a way to pay disrespect.
It can develop into a tic.
And it's a cultural thing.
But overall it's nasty, unhygienic, rude and it should be forbidden (it is in some places) You can swallow instead of spit.

I've seen men AND women spit (though mostly men). It's disgusting and low class!

i also see girls at my school (junior high) spit. the only reason u need to spit is when you have phlegm or ate something disagreeable.
