(www.wikipedia.org reports) On September 18, 2006, various boxing web sites, including SecondsOut, have reported that Hopkins is considering a heavyweight title fight with Oleg Maskaev in June 2007. Hopkins has begun initial consultations with Mackie Shilstone, the revered sports fitness expert, to determine whether or not it would be feasible for Hopkins to build a heavyweight physique capable of competing with the much larger Maskaev.

Boxrec.com Says he is fighting an unknown fighter on July 14th 2007... Is Bernard Hopkins REALLY going to challenge for the WBC heavyweight title? If so, can he POSSIBLY beat the guy who KOed Hasim Rahman twice? If Maskaev has a 1 rd KO loss to McCall, a 2 rd KO loss to "Goofy" Whitaker, a 4 rd KO loss to Kirk Johnson, as well as 2 other KO losses, can Bernard pull it off? Should he try?

I think it will be worth watching. Maskaev is a bum. Him beating rahman doesnt say much. Only thing rahman did in his career is land a lucky punch on glass jaw lennox lewis.Other than that he is a bum. I think hopkins has a chance, there is no one in the heavyweight division anyway. Not a great chance but a chance. Hopkins is a good boxer, but I dont know if he can handle giving up that much size.

This is in response to a comment you made on how Sonny Liston would defeat Marciano: keep dreaming! Marciano was harder to hit than you might realize. And all the myths concerning Liston's punch capacity apply equally for the Rock as well. Ali himself said he was sore for quite some time after receiving pulled body punches in the infamous Computer Fight of 1969. So save it. Liston could not have utilized his overestimated jab because Rocky would have been banging away inside at his arms and body. I'd pick Marciano in 8.

Why shouldn't he?
There's an in depth interview with Hopkins in the latest Ring magazine about this. Hopkins talks in length about the fight with Maskaev he's actively seeking. Provided Maskaev gets by his next opponent, this fight will happen.
Hopkins has a better than decent chance of pulling it off.

Bernard Hopkins is too old, even for Maskaev. If he did beat Maskaev it would be with a lucky, early round punch. Hopkins is what, 42? I like him alot, always have, but Maskaev will beat him within 7 or 8 rounds.

B Hop can pull it off he has the skill. Can Shilstone get him effectively bulked up without losing the foot and hand speed he'll need to win this fight. That's the big question. He has a chance because the heavyweight title holders are lacking in talent and skill.
