I have a Philips digital camera that I just purchased for Christmas, and I plug the USB cable into my computer, and the other end into my camera and the "new hardware found" message does not appear.

First make sure the camera and/ or software is compatible with your Operating System, then make sure you have installed the proper drivers for the camera you are using. Try uninstalling any software etc. you installed originally, then restart and try again.

Your digital camera should come with a CD, if not just go to start, then click control panel, then change the view to classic view or something like that and finally click on Add new hardware

you didn't specify if you're on a Mac or PC, and how new your computer is, but it could be a couple things:

a) your printer doesn't have the "driver" for your camera installed in it, which you might be able to find on the manufacturor's website or on an included CD with your camera
b) i think on Macs you can plug things in anytime, but on PCs you have to connect the things before starting up, however that was a while ago, and I dont know if they have improved that yet.
