When I had watercolor painting class in college. Our professor would bring magazines filled with landscapes, people, animals, etc. We then would try to paint what we saw. As an artist, I have learned to use my own work to make reproduction. Like the other person said, go ahead and take a camera, take pictures, then use them to paint your work. This will help you work your way up to painting my memory, or sitting and paint your surroundings. You can find clients that would like their portrait reproduced in a watercolor painting. The better you get, you can then charge for your service.

Good Luck :-)

This is what I have problems with too. I suggest going outside. Paint the landscape and any other people walking by. It's like copying art, because you're looking at something...but for you it's original because you're the first to put it on paper. Good luck! ^_^

I like to carry a camera around with me. Whenever I see something that inspires me I photograph it. Then it becomes my photo and art, not a copy. Buy a bunch of flowers and try different arrangements, visit botanical gardens and take pictures.
The key is to focus on what inspires you and you will begin finding sources of inspiration in many places.

Can you draw what you see in front of you? This is a good way to research your subjects and increase your powers of observation and fill up your sketchbook with ideas for rainy days.

Look at landscape pictures (mountains, tress, grass, and the sun) and try to put use what they have in their pic in your painting. Just look at alot of piantings and try to get an idea from what you saw. Websites to visit are http://digitalart.org/

Get a digital camera, find a park and go nuts shooting.
