Back when I believed in God I believed out of routine at first. Then somewhere around 12 I believed out of fear. I was honestly afraid to question anything. I thought that I would go to hell for blasphemy if I questioned certain things. I believed out of fear until I was in my 20s and figured there isn't anything to fear and stopped believing.

Nope. God is good and certainly powerful, but most bad stuff is the result of evil human activity. I don't think of "God" as a separate entity--I would consider God like a person's conscience or the beauty of nature, stuff like that. I take a more animistic view toward God.

So if I feared God, I would fear nature, the universe, the inner workings of people's minds. Sure, there are aspects of nature that are startling or scary sometimes, but that's usually because we fail to see the big picture. I think fear of God comes from misunderstanding God's true nature. Things that I fear come from disease, cruelty, somebody else's bad karma slopping over into my life. That's not God.

So if you assume that God is the good that runs through everything, then there's nothing to fear. Unless you fear good. Then you better watch out.

No, that is not why I believe in God. I became a Christian when I was young because I just always loved Jesus. He was appealing to me right from the start. He is a beautiful Savior and has helped me through many hard times. When I think of the power of God and of the fact that He created the oceans and mountains it does put awe into my heart. He is just so great that it really does cause me to pause and be respectful of Him. That is why I get so upset on this Yahoo site, that people don't understand His power. It would be like a little flea yelling at you that you are a jerk and that they don't believe in you. I just can't understand that kind of boldness toward the Creator of the world and universe.

Not out of fear but I do fear God

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever."

Fear and conviction are usually enough to bring folks to God. Once you learn more about Him that is replaced by love and the willingness to serve. But to not fear the all-powerful God is foolish.

How about Kaitlin who fears God but not out of fear? Does that make any sense? It makes no sense to fear God either.

No, but you know what, it's good to be God fearing. On a side note, ever read The Summa by St. Thomas Aquinas? Good stuff!
Check the link on his proofs for the existence of God.
