I would like to learn hebrew. I know I can use the old book and tape method but is there anything else that might help?

Total immersion in a language, by living in a community where that language is used, is the most efficient method. I am not sure how effective that would be in the case of Hebrew, which is the official language of Israel. Note that many different languages (Yiddish, Arabic, English) are used in Israel.

You might want to look into language courses at local universities. Language instructional methods are changing all the time.

The suggestion that you check a local synagogue is a good one, but you may have problems finding someone whose primary purpose will be to provide language, not religious instruction. If you are not Jewish, you might prefer Hebrew language classes at a Christian seminary.

The absolute best way to learn a language is through the "total immersion" method. Being placed into a situation where only the new language is spoken.

I would recommend a good Hebrew school or a trip (extended ) to Israel.

The best way to learn a language is to live among the people who speak it.If that is not possible maybe should try one of those interactive software like roseta stone or get dictionaries and guide books for the language, listen to radio stations on net from that country. You must learn pronunciation and spelling in the same time.

If there is a synagogue or a Jewish Community Center near you-go there for lessons. The best, and fastest way is to go to Israel for awhile, and stay around people who speak the language, and you will learn it faster.

Asssuming you are not able to speak with native speakers, try PImsluer first, then Rosetta stone. If you can only go with one, rosetta stone is probably the one I would choose. Many options, and very short lessons.
