Generally speaking, the lighter and stronger the bike, the faster it will go. I like Titanium bikes, but they can be very expensive. An other factor is aerodynamics: The less wind drag the faster. Also, the more power you can transfer to the pedals the faster. Recumbent bicycles can have an advantage, over the upright bicycle, because they capitalize on the last two characteristics.
The worlds fastest human powered bicycle would have to be the Varna Diablo II. It holds the world record set in 2002 at 81.0 mph (130.36 kph) by rider Sam Whittingham. It is a recumbent bicycle designed and built by George Geogeiv and the Varna team of Canada.

The worlds fastest bicycle is powered by a rocket by the Swiss Rocketman. In 1999, rider Genevois Alec Beney hit a top speed of 150 mph (241.39 kph): A true "crotch rocket".

It's your conditioning that makes the difference. When I started racing, I used to get intimidated by guys with super-expensive, high-tech bikes. Apparently some of them were counting on their bikes to win the races for them because they often got dropped quickly. Just get a decent bike, and train hard.

Depends on the power of the rider. An olympic sprinter can put out over 2500 watts for a short distance and top 40mph on a single speed bike.
My fastest is 53mph on a good downhill on my Dean titanium, and I can regularly top 50mph depending on the ride.

The one with the strongest rider! All major manufacturers' top-end bikes are pretty equal.

If you are talking bicycles "It's not about the bike (Lance said that). and it's true it's the rider that makes the bike fast.

Lightspeed, I reckon. Titanium rocks. But it depends on the rider. Take a gander at Major Taylor.

for tri training and racing, the Quintana Roo Line is sweet, though expensive. I am a Trek girl, but have oggled the Quintana Roo's for quite some time.
