This is one of the toughest verses of the New Testament really. Death to self is the radical command of the Christian life. To take up your cross meant one thing: you were going to a certain death, and your only hope was in resurrection power. It sounds strange to say "you will never live until you walk down death row with Jesus," but that is the basic idea. You can’t gain resurrection life without dying to self first. Giving our lives to Jesus all the way, and living as an others-centered person does not take away from our lives, it adds to it.
Its kind of like this: You don’t lose a seed when you plant it, though it seems dead and buried. In truth, you set it free to be what it was always intended to be!

People who lose there lifes for someone else are selfish imo. I would much rather have someone gain there life for me then lose it. But I guess maybe thats what he ment just wanted us to figure it out maybe? Example someone starts out as a criminal then find the way and becomes a saint of some sort. And we are all saints of some sort imo. But anyhow that person has not lost his life for something or someone but instead that person has gained it. And you can always gain more life imo.

I think you have got the wrong point of view. See jesus sure will love to help others. Why not you do your best to help others. That is what he said. Do you think does he really wants you to lose your life?Help others and avoide troubling others eventhough if you could not help people.

By giving it to Jesus. Jesus is Lord and Savior. Let him have the throne of your heart. Only he is fit to rule there. Then you will find freedom.
