Vato can be literally translated in English as dude.

Vato is an east LA hispanic slang, meaning homeboy. It is also a way to call some friends.

Ése or 'És' (for short) means the same thing.

NOTE: Vato, cholo and ese are all words used by Mexican Americans (Chicanos) words that have been passed down throughout generations since the 1940's.

Vato is a slang that people from the North of México use a lot, and also some chicanos, it can be translated as dude, pal, buddy, bro.. I guess the closest one in English is dude.

If it is Spanish, I never heard of it.

It must be a slang from some specific country.

I used to luv that word homesz when i wz into gang style, and it is hard to translate but I would say it means more like your close friendz that r just like your family, but you would not use this term in front of elders like your abuella...it's not cursing but it's a very loose term...
