Make sure they are a pretty good size. Also they can eat and drink on their own. So they sound like its about time. AND make sure they can walk properly and stuff.

If they are still nursing from their mother even a little DO NOT separate them yet! They get special nutrients from their mother's milk and it also helps them build their immunity. She will stop them herself when it is time. I would imagine if they are still nursing they are somewhere between 4-6 weeks old. The general feeling is after 8 weeks it is ok to give them away. I would definitely not recommend any sooner and would even suggest waiting until 10-12 weeks - the reason for this is in addition to eating from momma cat, they are learning necessary behavior and survivial skills. Kittens separated from their mother's too soon can often develop psychological and socialization issues

While some people take them away as early as 6 weeks, 8 to 10 weeks is better for the kittens. Their mother not only feeds them, but also teaches them how to groom themselves, how to use a litter box and cat manners. I know that sounds silly, but cats who don't learn how to behave around other cats often don't get along with other cats. I have a cat who was on her own from a very early age and although she can take care of herself outside, she doesn't get along with any of my other cats who were left with their mothers longer. Definitely make sure they can eat and drink on their own before you take them away, but litter box knowledge helps, too.

when a kitten is fully weaned off of its mother and eating solid foods on its own it should be OK. The average age is about 8-10 weeks old. They need to learn all of there instincts off of there mother.

8-10 weeks is usually safe. I agree that 6 weeks is far too young.

The HSUS has a great webpage to help you find good homes for all the kittens (you'll have to scroll down for what pertains to you):

Good luck to you all. : )

8-10 weeks is always what is recommended. 6 weeks is far too young. I usually try to wait til the 10 weeks if I can, they are less reliant on mom by then.

I would suggest around 6 to 8 weeks old you'll be able to tell when they will be ok
