My dog is 1 yr old and we just got her a couple days ago, she's never been housebroken, though she is catching on quickly to being training pad trained, because of her age, will it be possible to housebreak her? Or will pad training be her extent?

Sorry guys, forgot to mention, she's a beagle.

One more thing...I do take her outside alot and for little walks here and there, the problem is is that she was never leashed trained, so I'm trying to incorperate her getting used to the leash as well as going outside. It works sometimes, other times I have to pick her up and take her outside, stay out there with her for like 10mins then pick her up and take her back in the house.

The quickest way that I know of is to control the amount and frequency of her water. Let her drink often, but within a few minutes of her drink take her outside and walk around a little where she has gone before or put a pee pad outside so that she knows this is the smell she's looking for. Watch carefully and as soon as she pees make likes she has just layed a golden egg. Make a really, really big deal about her being so smart and so forth. Dogs love it when we make a big fuss over them. She will remember this and want to do it again soon. You keep up your raving about how great she is until she hasn't had an accident for a few days and this will be the new habit.

By then she will know you love her and she will be habituated to going outside.

This works really quickly even though it is rather time consuming for a few days, after then it's over.

I don't think there should be any reason she won't be able to be housebroken, 1 year old is really still a puppy. You've already said she catches on fast to the pad's so we know she's got some smarts :) Just like training a puppy its going to take some time and patience on your part. But on the good side, she's older so she won't have to go every 5 minutes like puppies. Here's a few sites I've found that can give you a few tips. Good Luck!

I don't believe in crating a dog. My roommate crated hers while she went to work, and the dog ended up pooping in it. And as punishment, she let the poor thing stay in there with his poop. Some dogs will use the bathroom in their crate. What I suggest is taking your dog outside every hour or so. Also keep an eye out for when he starts to pace. The quickly grab him and go outside. When he does, give him lots of praise and even treats. When you're not home, I would leave him in a bedroom and leave the training pads down. Good Luck.

You didn't mention the breed, but with patience you can train the dog to go outside. Keep her crated for the next while and take her outside for bathroom breaks. Dogs will not soil their sleeping place if at all possible.

You can also try moving the pee pad closer and closer to the door daily so that you can "ease" the dog to go outside.

If it were me, I would begin by taking the dog outside first thing in the morning and the last thing at night.Take it out about a half our after its breakfast during midday, and then after it's evening dinner. In between times the dog should be able to control it's bladder.

Actually, should be fairly easy. She is older and can hold longer for one thing and should be a bit more settled than a young pup.

The fact she is using the pad is big step. Now she does need time to settle into her new home so don't rush her. Obviously, you are letting her know how pleased you are with the pee pad use!! I assume you are going outside with her to play/potty and more praise. Pick whatever words to use to train like "let's go potty" and out the door you go. She potties and you praise, using the "potty" word. Same goes for "sit", "stay", etc.

The use of treats for training is fine, don't over do. And for now pick a certain goodie for the training and only for that.

If not already, move the pad to door area!. I have a houseful being in rescue. I use the hospital bed pads and wash. Keep one in front of door like a rug at night, just in case. At he door you want her to learn is the "let's go potty" door. Dogs are fully capable of learning the word to match the action you want.

Time, patience and lots of praise. Dogs naturally want their person to be happy with them.

If you can possibly get a large crate, it would be very helpful. We started taking our dog outside to potty every thirty minutes, then once per hour, once per two hours, and so on. We put her in her crate when we left home. In the crate, she should refrain from using the bathroom. Don't spank her! It makes them nervous and only makes matters worse. Just keep taking her outside! If she does start to potty, tell her no and run outside with her. She is NOT too old by no means. Good luck!

every time that she does the toilet take her outside(even if she has finished or in the middle of it) she should soon learn to do it outside and if she does, give her lots and lots of praise along with a treat and she'll soon chose to do the toilet outside but remember you only got her a few days ago give her some time to get use to the new atmosphere.
