the name of a good first-time bird. I'd rather have a larger bird over a parakeet or something like that

A quaker parrot is a great starter bird - as long as you have researchd everything there is to know about them. They have the ability for a large vocab (mine says about 25 words/phrases) When they bite (all birds will bite at some point) their beaks are not big enough to break a finger. They are pretty hardy and have wonderful personalities. Please before you buy go to a rescue. There are many birds that need new homes and you won't line a breeders pocket to keep breeding without educating!
Good luck- and realize if you take any kind of bird into your home you are taking a life long (the birds -possibly yours) oath to make sure this little caged prisoner has the best life possible without the stress of getting rehomed.

You may want a big bird but you have to think of the bird. If were you I would get a budgie "parakeet". They really are the best starter birds around.

Cockatiels, thier a little bigger, you can teach them to talk. Their sweet, loveing, and cute. All birds need lots of attention and birds might not be a good first pet. But if you have had a pet before there amazing. Cockatiels are very friendly and mine isn't noisy at all. They do poop lots, which is a down side though. My Cockatiel, Genie, is very bright and lets me know what he wants. They are definatly the best kind of bird to get!

Cockatiels are good birds to have for pets. They are larger than parakeets or budgies and I have seen a few who actually talked. If you handle them daily they are very loving and tame well. We had two cockatiels for years and loved them dearly.

cockatoos are good, love able, but require a lot of attention like a child as most birds do.If you don't have the time then a bird is not a good choice for a pet. they can live long lives and unless you are willing to make a commitment for years. you aren't doing the bird any favors. My cockatoo will outlive me they can live for 75 years, but she is in my will to go to my son who wants her.
