If you have a dog club in the area, call and ask about beagle breeders. I am sure that there are good breeders somewhere there.

Here is a link to the American Kennel Club and its breeder listings:

You should check the information on beagles and their breeding to find out if the parents were tested for any congenital problems which beagles may have. I don't know specifically about beagles, but for Siberian Huskies, they check their eyes for certain diseases to prevent breeding dogs with vision problems.

When you find a breeder, let them know the purpose you want the puppy for . Make sure that to get a pup bred for temperament and good health, not just confirmation.

The ONLY place to buy a female beagle puppy is from a responsible breeder. Pet shops, internet ads, newspaper ads, and neighbors are often THE WORST places to get puppies. They come from irresponsible unethical breeders who know little to nothing about breeding - they usually just want money, bred accidentally, or want more of their dog running around.

But, you have a slight problem. A good breeder won't sell a dog to someone they haven't met. To solve that problem, find a good breeder and tell them your plan. Then, let your mom know that you want to give her a puppy and that she can pick it out. Give her the breeder's name and number and have her meet up with the breeder. The breeder will ask her a ton of questions and then when the pups are born, she'll be able to take one home. And if a breeder will sell to someone sight unseen, run away as fast as you can.

If you are looking for a beagle as a pet for your mom, not planning to show it or compete, go to a beagle rescue or a local animal shelter. There are usually beagles there. They won't have papers or any idea of where the dog came from, but who cares if it is just a pet? They all love the same!

I got mine from a beagle resue. Try your local yellow pages or spca and see if any are in your area. There are a lot of beagles out there that need good homes. But I word of advice. Beagles are very hard to house train. There noses are into everything and they are very stubborn. They are a hunting dog, which does not mean they have to hunt but they require alot of room to run. Not to be kept in the house or tied up. Good luck. Take care.
