Ever since I've stopped liking him I've been more myself around him and more casual, then he heard my friend asking me if I like him anymore and he kept asking me what the answer was...
The thing is that he's been practically dating my friend for the longest time, and he didn't care even when I liked him.

More than likely, his ego is bruised. As long as you had a crush on him, he had someone to fall back on if things didn't work out with whomever he is dating and it made him feel secure (but sucked for you, no doubt!). Now that he does not have that he feels less secure in himself as maybe he isn't as great as he thought he was.

When a relationship ends it is not uncommon for the guy to wonder about things he has lost all of a sudden. During the relationship sometimes the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence. I think this guy you are referencing is finding out the truth of that statement.
