My friend has one of these delightful people, and he is always tugging the feathers out of his breast, to a degree where his chest is totally bald. I have suggested many times that she take him to the vet as he probably has mites, but she says he cant have as he hasnt been in contact with other birds.....what else could it be, and how do I persuade her to get help for him??? He is very loved, and played with, and has flight time out of his cage, which is a large one, and he eats fruit and parrot food, and has clean water.

Have you been eating the birdseed again?

I assume you mean conure? There is no such bird as an amazon conure. It is either an amazon OR a conure. I wonder which species it is. I keep amazons AND conures and have patagoanian conures, mitred conures, red masked conures, green cheeked conures and maroon belied conures. I also have orange winged amazons, blue fronted amazons and white fronted amazons.
Feather plucking is usually stress or disease related. They pluck if the have a pain, or are stressed or are not fed properly. Your friend needs to rehome his bird to someone who has more of a clue how to care properly for the bird than he appears to have.
I do parrot rescue and get very upset at the amount of ignorance related mistreatment which happens to them. Usually they get brought to me when they are ill or completely plucked and it takes me lots of money at the vets and many months getting their health back through a proper diet.

tell her to take him straight to the vets.. birds as the vet will tell her, can be cannibalistic, i had a cockateil and he started doing the same thing. he had no mites, and was well loved. we tried everything, even having a collar fitted on him, no joke? but it just didnt stop him and he ended up more or less eating himself to death?

Tell her the bird could die. That might get her alarmed. Maybe the bird is just bothered by something, he could be bored, he might want another friend.
