I have often wondered, when driving, where do the signposts give mileage to? For example, I'm driving and a signpost says: Belfast 20 miles. Is that 20 miles to the city centre or to the outskirts or to a designated location? Anybody have any ideas?

It is usually the distance to the city/town/village centre. What defines the 'centre' of a location is usually decided by the local planners and the Highways Department.

it is generally a designated location in the city centre. for example, signposts that say "london" refer to trafalgar square, so if you're trying to get to the city it might be an extra one or two miles.
