At americanairlines.com website, on the lefthand side click on "travel information", Then click on "baggage information". Within the US it is 2 checked bags @ 50 lbs. each and 1 carry-on at 40 lbs. Size is length + width + height = 62" or less for checked and 45" for carry-on. They WILL charge you extra if they are overwieght. I just had that experience on another airline.

What's your origin and destination? This depends on your airline and class, so you are well advised to check with your airline by phone. But in general, for flights into and out of US and many Asian countries, you are allowed 2 bags (China Airlines: 30 kg; Continental: 50 lbs EACH). Be careful if you are exiting from Europe: generally there is no limit on how many bags you can check, but the TOTAL weight of all bags is limited to 20 kg (I'm talking with reference to Cathay Airlines).
Once I flew from the US to Germany carrying 2 bags at 20 kg each free of charge, but when I departed from Germany for Hong Kong, I was charged close to 300 Euros IN CASH.

If you know for sure your bags will exceed the allowance, it is better and cheaper to ship your additional bags as cargo--they usually arrive the same time as you arrive, or up to a few days later.

In addition to the checked bags, you can bring ONE small suitcase/backpack on board. I said one, but you can bring an additional laptop computer or similar equipment and they generally don't complain too much if you bring another shopping bag of belongings.
