Im am certain that a week ago when my son's school took him out for recess he got sick. The next day he had a fever a cough and sneezing. He got over that in a couple of days. However he has a really bad cough now. Over the weekend I put up a new bed for him and his family seems to think thats why he has suck a bad cough now. The thing is the bed is a little higher then a normal bunk bed (mabey) 5 1/2 feet high.
I think however that well it is cough and cold season so a bad cough is bound to come around sooner or later.
In addition to that instead of bed rest they think its better to let him play and do what he wants around the house.
I thought bed rest was aways the answer to being sick. Not what the child think is best. I cant really say anything cause Im only the step dad. I love my son and This really irritates me. I want to say something but its not in my place.
Im I wrong? what should I do? What is going on here?
PLEASE HELP!
THANKS!

Well you said it... your the step DAD. Be a dad and speak your opinion! (hey when you find out what this cold thing is let me know.... my doc can't get me and my three children in until Monday!) We have the EXACT same thing running in our house right now. My 7yr old, 5 yr old, and 3 yr old have it, as well as my self. I have been giving them medication and allowing them to play QUIETLY (no running, screaming and acting like animals!) as they wish in the house. Your son will rest when when he gets worn down. My kids are taking about 3 naps a day right now when their medicine starts to wear off....but i don't see any point in confining them to bed! The only reason that I can think that they would say the bed would cause a cough is from a ceiling fan. IF he has one running during the night, that can lead to a nasty little cold if he isn't used to it... but remember heat rises and he is up a fuzz higher... so he shouldn't be getting cold! He could have gotten sick from his family for all you know... my kids have been on break for over a week now, and hadn't seen any family until Christmas eve... when this all started in our house! I would speak up and tell the family what you think. You are this child's step dad.... and you do have a right to speak about him! I do agree with you that kids are kids and they are gonna get sick..... but the bed rest thing is an old wives tale. Children will let you know by their actions when they are feeling well enough to be up. Sometimes moving around some will get their body moving and allow them to fight the infection better.

Ok, it is cold season.

Most likely it is just a viral infection, a doctor can't give any meds for that. Cold and cough med is best.

On avg a cold lasts 7-10 days. It gets better along the way. In the middle it is the worst.

What hte bunk bed has to do with all this i don't know. Why they would think a bed has any thing todo beats me.

Bed rest is good to regain energy. But if the child doesn't feel sick and mopy then they are fine. They have much more energy and stamina than we do.

It is the cold season, your right. However, heat does rise and can dry the air and could cause him to cough with a dry cough. It is hard to truly say, like you said, is it left over from the cold or is it the dry air? Good question and can argue the point. If his cough continues longer than a week and he never had the problem before, I would try moving his bed back down to two feet to see if it is the dry air causing the coughing. As for bed rest.... It is the best thing with the fever, however, moving around does help you to feel better along with a hot bath or shower. Good luck and it does sound like your trying to be a good dad.

If the boy is being a pain and is cracky then he should be put to bed, a new bed is not going to give him a cough, and it is hard to keep a 4 year old down unless the cough medicine has a narcotic in it. But you know as the DAD step or not you shoud say how you feel and what you are thinking, this way your opioin wether wanted or not is out there in the open so one way can say later "Well why did you not say something" hope he is better soon

First off, germs are NOT spread, nor can one get sick from being outside. Germs and illnesses are spread by someone coughing or sneezing directly on you, or on something you touch (like a doorknob or desk) and then you touch your eyes, nose, or mouth before you wash your hands. Outside for recess, even with wet hair, has NOTHING to do with it. Check with any doctor if you don't believe me.

If he has a simple cold, letting him do things around the house (playing a little, some homework, resting and watching tv or reading) is feasible. I wouldn't send him to sports practice or play dates or anything, and if he's got a fever, he needs to stay home from school.

Some kids have a post-nasal drip with a cold (or allergy) that gets aggravated by the super dry air (from the heat in the house) this time of year. Try running a cool mist vaporizer in his room at night and see if that helps. If he's having problems breathing - like he's wheezing or complaining that his chest hurts, he needs to see a doctor ASAP - it could be pneumonia.

playing outside is good for kids. You can't catch a cold because you are "cold". You have to get a virus to get sick. Most people get viruses when they are inside cause there are so many germs cooped up inside.
I dont' think the bed makes any difference. If someone in his class is sick he is bound to get sick.
It's ok for him to play like he normally does. Bed rest wouldn't help his cold at all. You just got to let it runs it's course. The cough can last for another week after the cold is gone. My 4 yr old daugher just got over one. She had a cough for 2 weeks and now it's gone.

Take him to the doctor and getthe cough checked. The new bed height cannot give him a cough. Kids should be allowed to play when they feel good enough. Just not rough and be sure he gets rest in between.

Going out for recess did not make him sick. He probably picked up a virus at school.

Going outside does NOT cause a child to get sick. Gettubg a bew bed no matter how high it is doesn't cause a child to get sick either. Being cooped up in a class room with children who have coughs, runny noses and are spreading germs DOES make a child get sick. Playing is fine for a child when they are sick besides a parent would get worn out trying to keep a child in bed all day.

It is an old wives tale that if you go outside in the cold weather you will get a cough or cold. A virus is what causes the cold. If your child is feeling like doing something then let him to do things in moderation. Now if he is using not feeling well so he can stay home from school then that is a different story.
make sure he gets lots of vit. C that does help

How old is he? You never said.

Being in the cold won't get him sick. Getting germs will. Don't blame the cold. A bed won't make it anyworse, unless he's allergic to the materials in the best.

While rest is best for a child, if he's willing to run around then let him! Give him a lot of water, and give him tyelnol if he's acting like he needs it. If he has a 99.9* fever and is acting fine, don't give it.

Let the illness work it's way out and you'll be fine.
