Im going to a party for New Years and i dont want to come in empty handed. Im not a wine drinker so i have no idea which one is good.

generally, you're safe if you don't mind spending a little bit of money. not that all expensive wines are good and cheaper ones are bad, it's just you increase your odds. champagne is traditional for new years...you could go that route. a moderately priced wine like kendall jackson or robert mondavi (any kind-chardonnay, merlot, pinot, ect) would be acceptable. i don't know what your guests are expecting...just the thought seems nice to me. you could ask the cashier at a liquor store-they should be knowledgable and helpful.

It is thoughtful of you to bring some wine, so I would think that just about any wine that comes in a bottle would be appreciated.
The word "good" when referring to wine is relative. Do you mean good tasting or price range? I'll split the difference... you should be able to pick up a "good" bottle for $15 or less. If there are going to be a large number of guests you may want to opt for two bottles of an inexpensive California sparkling wine. Or you can be impressive with a single bottle of a French, true Champagne. It will cost about twice the price so it depends on what you want the gift to represent. Another excellent choice would be an Oregon Merlot or Cabernet/Merlot blend. Any bottle from the Willamette Valley will be great. It is reasonably priced and will be appreciated by wine people too. Sparkling Wine is always the safest to bring to a New Years Party-It goes with nearly everything. Make sure it is a Brut (Dry). Without breaking the bank-Try Schramsberg, Mumm, Piper, or Domain St. Michelle.
Pinot Noir makes a nice host gift too, as it is traditionally lighter and fruitier, TR Elliott '03. Acacia is a standard-I believe their '05 is out. Belvedere, David Bruce '03.

For New Year's, champagne is always a nice gift. Korbel is a popular but not outrageously expensive option. (I personally like the Korbel Blanc de Noir - but many people like the Chardonney Champagne).
If you want tradiitonal wine, it depends on if you want white or red and your price range. Merlot is very popular in red wine these days and the price has actually come down quite a bit lately.
White wines I would say Reisling (Beringer or Mondavi are nice and reasonably priced) if you want a sweeter wine - Chardonney if you want a 'mid range' that's usually popular.
Drier white wines are less popular I find because most people who prefer dry wines go straight for the reds in my experience.

If you want good wine, but want to keep it on the cheap, get Clos Du Bois or Rodney Strong Cab. Both are good and only about $10. If you want champagne, go with Chateau Ste. Michelle. Agian, on the cheap side, but also really good.
