I go to the movies a lot, but I am starting to think it might not be such a good idea anymore. Over the last few years, more and more young African-American males have become very loud and raucous. At first I thought it was just a local problem, but I attended a theatre in another city and my relatives have noticed the same thing happening. It seems that it has become trendy for African-American youths to interact with the screen and yell at the actors. Has anyone else seen this happen? Is it a cultural problem in the black community?

I have asked them to be quiet in the past, however, there were about 20 blacks sitting in a group, and they all proceeded to yell more. I did get my money back however I think confronting such a large group of blacks can be dangerous. They are acting like they have a right to behave this way, and I am trying to find out why.

They are just being what the actor in the comedy club said they are.

That's an interesting observation.

First, if indeed you are truly interested in understanding this phenomenon (and not merely complaining about it) let's be mindful not to categorize a group of people because of isolated, individualistic behavior. For every group of loud African-American males in a theater, there can also be found a quiet bunch, and even a group of loud folks of other persuassions. Despite this behavior being a disturbance to you, being loud is not any culture's "problem".

That said, a number of African-Americans have been known to be a bit "interactive" (as you say) in movie theaters. If it is of any condolence to you, I've observed this as well. Some people attribute it to cultural habit (although not EVERYONE has this habit). African-American culture can be very communicative, interactive, energetic and unreserved. This is evident in a lot of cultural things like dancing, singing, playing sports, writing, music, visual art, performance, etc.

So, if you want to continue enjoying going to the movies, either embrace it as a habit that some African-Americans possess, or ask the theater attendant to ask those folks to be quiet. Or better yet, go to another theater.

Probably the same reason why White people let their kids run up and down the isle.. seriously, it's not ALL Black people..so be fair but there are a few of us that grew up "talking" back to the screen.. it's what happens at home and unfortunately.. not all of us have proper home training so we'll know how to act in public.. Plus most youths like to be seen, so acting out is a great way to get your attention.. after all..you posted this question so it must have worked!

It reminds me of a time when I lived in NYC and a co-worker asked me out to a movie. When we got to the movie I learned he was one of those guys that enjoyed yelling at the actors on screen (btw - he was not African-American). I was mortified at the time but afterwards we were good enough friends that I could tell him I would never go to a movie again with him because he was too embarrassing to be around. He laughed and called me uptight. I think some kids just want attention, think they're being funny, and may not realize some people find it offensive.

This is a hard question to answer because the truth is both sensitive and may be misinterpreted. However, I'll give it a try. These kind of behaviors are indicative of low self-esteem and absolutely not limited to any particular race, ethnic or religious group.

It is definitely true that for many young black people they are faced with inordinate pressures - more crime, more racism, more poverty and in the U.S. a society that is not geared towards them and often communicates a negative image. So in this particular pattern "acting out" is a way to combat very difficult feelings.

It is not limited to that group or any group. Many people with low self-esteem tend to be seemingly less sensitive to others in some settings, mostly mimicking how they perceive the world.

Its not African Americans...its everyone now. When friends are in a big group they act a little different maybe even obnoxious....whatever race they are. If you were surrounded by a bunch of your friends and you were going to a movie, you might try to let go off your excess energy. But I have noticed that if society tells you this is what everyone of your race does (ex. being loud) then you should too. It's that kind of generalizes that encourages a specific race to do something.

I went up to Cincinnati, Ohio last weekend for Christmas and went to see Rocky Balboa with my fiancee. I swear everyone there was black just about and they kept acting up. It's the way some of them are raised in the nonchalant manner. They always have their cell phones out texting and talking to people as if no one could hear them. Then the yelling and all the commotion. What I would do next time is tell the manager of the theater that this was happening and that you were not satisfied with the showing and they will give you your money back or give you a pass to come back later for free. It happens all the time though because most black people grow up with the "thug" mentality. Just show them you have more class than that. Don't get upset face to face, just go to the theater manager and report it and get them kicked out. I guarantee you that they would want your business and not that of an immature teenager.

wanna change places??? I live in a mostly white community, and those kids are rowdy as all get out! The girls licking on the boys, hip bones out - flat butts sagging, the boys scratching and digging in their crotches with their tats and fake jewelry. Trying to watch a movie with them is ridiculous!! Did I mention they were white? I usually have to go to a Black neighborhood for some peace and quiet! But some real advice, if you go see movies like Harry met Sally, you'll never have to worry about stuff like that...

No it's not a cultural problem. It's just how some of them like to act. Anyhow, if you get enough ba**s why don't you go ask them to quiet down instead of coming on here asking us!!!!!

edited since you edited

They do have a right to act that way(yelling out sometimes.....not completely being rude and yelling the whole time) since they paid their money also......trust me if you didn't have an attitude when you asked them(which I'm sure you did) then they probably would've respected it. Otherwise they see you as a white guy tryna boss em around and of course black people don't like that so they're going to rebel

You already spoke back this question. In each and every race there are " loud and obnoxious" human beings. The action picture you observed became Stomp the backyard it somewhat is a hype, extreme- potential, youthful teen concentrated action picture. So of course the objective industry would have those self same characteristics. in line with risk you have been the single that became out of place interior the action picture coach.

Yes, all people should stay home because certain people haven't been raised properly. Since they can't respect that they are one of many there to enjoy a movie which includes being able to see and hear it we should all stay home so the animals don't have to adjust their behavior. Regardless of anyones ethnicity or age you get respect when you earn respect....
